SAN DIEGO -
UC Davis-San Diego State Final Box
No. 24 San Diego State true freshman Angela Mitchell came off the bench to score a pair of goals to help lift the Aztecs to a 2-0 victory over UC Davis on Sunday at a sun-drenched SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, the nationally ranked Aztecs even their record at 1-1. The Aggies, meanwhile, fall to 1-1 on the year.
SDSU received the only goal it would need on the afternoon in the 31st minute. Mitchell, a native of Corona, entered the game in the 20th minute and changed the game from the outset. The forward used her speed and routinely dribbled past UC Davis defenders and her scoring sequence was no exception. Senior Katie Perry passed the ball to Mitchell and the freshman took it from there, sending her shot past Taylor Jern into the left side of the net.
The Aztecs carried the lead into halftime and continued to press forward in the second half. After 15 minutes passed, Mitchell was the first Aztec reserve to enter after intermission and made an instant impact. With Hannah Keane drawing two defenders in the middle of the box, the senior located a wide-open Mitchell to her right and 50 seconds after stepping onto the field, the freshman rattled her shot into the left side of the cage to give SDSU a two-goal cushion with less than 30 minutes to go.
The balance of the game featured more San Diego State offensive opportunities and numerous long-range attempts from the UC Davis offense. At the final horn, the Aztecs finished with a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. SDSU also attempted a season-high nine corner kicks. The Aggies, meanwhile, logged two corners and zero in the final 58 minutes, 20 seconds.
Aztec sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Trujillo earned her first start of her career and posted her first shutout while making three saves. The Miami, Florida, native entered the game with just 45 career minutes under her belt and played the full 90.
Offensively, Keane led all players with seven shots (two on goal) and freshman Aliyah Utush ranked second with a career-high five, including a game-high four on net. Andrea Damian led UC Davis with four shots and was one of just three Aggies to attempt a shot.
The Aztecs continue their season-opening four-game homestand next Friday, Aug. 29, when they play host to UC Riverside at 4 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. Admission is free.
