SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Director of Athletics Jim Sterk has announced that Mark Martinez has been promoted the position of Head Baseball Coach at San Diego State University. In addition three other members of the 2014 baseball staff have also been promoted.
Martinez, who was named Executive Head Coach in June, was instrumental in San Diego State's success this past season, taking over the day-to-day duties for a majority of this past season in the absence of Head Coach Tony Gwynn. He led the Aztecs to a 42-21 record, including victories in nine of their final 11 games entering the NCAA tournament. SDSU also had a Mountain West-high six players selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft, the most for the program since 2007.
Martinez, 52, joined the Aztecs as an assistant coach in July 2005. Prior to that, he spent 17 years as an assistant at New Mexico. As a player he was an all-conference and all-district shortstop at Mesa State, receiving his degree from the school in 1984.
Along with Martinez being named head coach, pitching coach John Pawlowski has been given the title of Associate Head Coach. In 2014 the former Auburn head man supervised an Aztec pitching staff that recorded the program's lowest team ERA (3.71) since the 1996 season.
Joe Oliveira, a former player at Pacific and in the Oriole organization, has been elevated to full-time assistant after serving as SDSU's volunteer assistant coach during the 2014 season. In addition, Cooper Sholder, who was the Aztecs' student manager the past four seasons, will move into the position of Director of Operations.
The other member of SDSU's 2014 staff, Director of Baseball Operations Landon Burt, recently accepted an assistant coaching position at San Diego Christian College.
