2014 SDSU Women's Soccer Schedule
San Diego State women's soccer head coach Mike Friesen announced his team's 2014 schedule today. The Aztecs will play 11 regular-season home games at SDSU Sports Deck and welcome the Mountain West Championship to campus in early November.
The back-to-back MW champions will face the reigning Big West champs, Cal State Fullerton, on Friday, Aug. 15, in a 7 p.m. friendly at SDSU Sports Deck. Then one week later on Aug. 22, San Diego State officially opens the campaign with a home date against Michigan State at 7 p.m. The Aztecs will close their season-opening weekend with an Aug. 24 contest vs. UC Davis at noon.
SDSU wraps up its four-game homestand the following week with games vs. UC Riverside (Aug. 29, 4 p.m.) and Michigan (Aug. 31, 7 p.m.). The Highlanders will head south to Montezuma Mesa a season after reaching the Big West championship game. The Wolverines, meanwhile, advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 and finished with an 18-4-1 record in 2013.
Perhaps San Diego State's toughest two-game stretch will occur in the Pacific Northwest as it travels to Portland, Ore. The Aztecs will face an 11-win team from last year in Washington on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m., before taking on a Portland squad (Sept. 14, 2:30 p.m.) that finished in a three-way tie for the West Coast title, reached the second round of the NCAA tournament and compiled a record of 17-3-1 a year ago.
SDSU will stay within in the WCC upon its return from Portland when it travels to cross-town foe USD on Sept. 19. The City Championship game is set for Torero Stadium at 7 p.m. Last season, the Aztecs defeated San Diego, 3-0, at SDSU Sports Deck. The weekend and non-conference portion of its slate will end for San Diego State with a noon home game vs. Idaho State on Sept. 21.
The Aztecs will begin their Mountain West title defense on the road starting Sept. 26 at San José State with first tap scheduled for 2 p.m. Then a trip to Central California is next as SDSU will face Fresno State at noon on Sept. 28.
San Diego State's MW home opener is set for Oct. 3 (7 p.m.) against conference newcomer Colorado College, which won both the Conference USA regular-season and tournament crowns and fell to Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament on penalty kicks in 2013. Air Force is next up on the docket at noon on Oct. 5.
The Aztecs will visit the Silver State to face Nevada (Oct. 10, 7 p.m.) and UNLV (Oct. 12, noon) before opening a three-game homestand starting Oct. 17 vs. Utah State (7 p.m.), a team SDSU faced in the 2013 MW semifinals. Boise State follows the Aggies to The Mesa on Oct. 19 looking to avenge their MW finals defeat to the Aztecs last season. Game time for the championship game rematch is set for 2:30 p.m.
Wyoming, a side that handed SDSU's its only league loss last year, visits America's Finest City on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. PT. The defeat prevented the Aztecs from posting their second straight unblemished conference record. Over the last two seasons, SDSU is 16-1 in Mountain West action.
After its game vs. the Cowgirls, San Diego State will head to Fort Collins, Colo., for a short one-game road trip to Colorado State. The tilt vs. the second-year program is scheduled for Oct. 26 at noon MT and represents SDSU's lone trip to the Mountain Time Zone.
The Aztecs will put the finishing touches on the regular season at home vs. New Mexico. The Senior Night game is slated for Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. Prior to the contest, San Diego State is expected to honor its five graduating seniors.
As a result of winning the conference title, SDSU will play host to the Mountain West Championship. The three-day event begins on Nov. 4 and runs through Nov. 8. The quarterfinal round will be contested on Nov. 4, with the winners facing one another in the semifinals on Nov. 6. The championship game is set for a 7 p.m. start on Nov. 8.
The Aztecs finished the 2013 campaign with a 13-7-2 record and a Mountain West-best record of 9-1. For the second straight year, San Diego State captured the MW regular-season title, won the conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
