SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four Aztec baseball players have garnered additional honors for their performances during the recently concluded 2014 collegiate season. Michael Cederoth and Ty France were named to the Perfect Game All-America third team while Brad Haynal (first team) and Cederoth (second team) also earned all-West Region honors. In addition, outfielder Greg Allen was West Region Gold Glove Award winner.
Cederoth, a right-hander from San Diego, Calif. (Steele Canyon HS) who was also selected a first-team Louisville Slugger All-American, served as the Aztecs' closer as a junior this year after performing in a starting role his first two years at SDSU. In 2014 he has compiled a record of 6-2 with 20 saves and a 2.28 earned run average. An all-Mountain West Conference honored, he was selected in the third round of the 2014 Major League draft by the Minnesota Twins
France's honor follows his being selected a third-team by Baseball America at the conclusion of the 2014 campaign. The sophomore from West Covina, Calif., hit .356 this past season while leading the team with 83 hits, 18 doubles and 55 runs scored. He also second on the squad in home runs (5), RBI (450) and walks (28). France was a first-team all-Mountain West honoree this season as he led the Aztecs in hitting in conference play with a .333 batting average (.364 overall) as he recorded 10 doubles and a pair of home runs in league action.
Haynal is the first player voted to the All-West Region team since 2009 when Stephen Strasburg and Addison Reed earned the honor. The junior catcher hit .313 this past season while leading the team in home runs (12) and RBI (49). Defensively he threw out 25-of-47 runners attempting to steal against him. Haynal was named the MVP of the 2014 Mountain West Tournament and was also a second-team all-conference selection. He was taken by the Miami Marlins in the 18th round of this year's pro draft.
Allen won his Gold Glove fielding .984 as the Aztecs' center fielder this past season. He made numerous spectacular plays in the outfield and also recorded five assists including throwing out runners on fielder's choices at second and third base. He hit .305 this past season with eight doubles and 52 runs scored in 61 contests. Allen, who was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the sixth round of the MLB draft, was named to the all-tournament team at last month's Mountain West Conference Tournament, the second straight year he has captured that honor.
San Diego State concluded its 2014 campaign with a final record of 42-21, the most wins since the 2002 season and the team's highest winning percentage since 1992. Season highlights included winning the Mountain West Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Regionals for the second time since in two years, placing five players on the all-tourney team (including the tourney MVP) and having five athletes earn all-Mountain West honors. In addition, six Aztecs were chosen in last week's Major League draft, the highest number since the 2007 season.
