SAN DIEGO - San Diego State has started its innovative renovation of Aztec Court at Peterson Gym, the home of Aztec volleyball, with a target completion date of Aug. 1, according to SDSU Associate Athletic Director of Events/Facilities and Equipment Nick Pettit.
The installation of a large modern 25-foot fan in the gym's ceiling has already been finished, while the facility will also get a new state-of-the-art maple court that provides comfort and support for athletes, all new bleachers with 238 premium seatbacks and new doors on the north and south ends. In addition, some of the retractable basketball hoops will be removed.
"We are so excited about the renovations to Aztec Court at Peterson Gym," SDSU volleyball head coach Deitre Collins-Parker said. "There will be a very different look to Peterson Gym. I am particularly excited about the quality of the floor and what it will mean to the health of our student-athletes. With the new bleachers and ceiling fan, we will now have a section that provides comfort for our spectators.
"All in all, this is coming as a new era of Aztec volleyball begins. Thank you to (Director of Intercollegiate Athletics) Jim Sterk and President Dr. Elliot Hirshman for making this happen."
According to Pettit, the cutting-edge renovation has been part of a long-term planning process over the years at SDSU, with knowledge that the court, bleachers and doors in Peterson Gym all needed to be updated. The goal is to have everything in place by the time the volleyball team begins practice in early August.
"It's a huge renovation that will make a substantial difference as far as giving our student-athletes something to be proud of," Pettit said.
