The San Diego State softball team was shut out by San José State, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in San Jose, Calif. The Aztecs dropped to 35-17 overall and 12-8 in Mountain West play, while the Spartans improved to 28-22 and 11-9.

SJSU got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when Alyssa Martinez had a leadoff double and moved to third on a single by Sharon-Ren Estrada. After a groundout by Erin Rodriguez, Nicole Schultz reached on a SDSU error and was credited with an RBI as Martinez scored. San Diego State sophomore pitcher Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) got out of the jam by striking out Casey Watt and Devin Caldwell swinging.

The Aztecs loaded the bases in the fourth on a single by senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.), a walk by freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and a four-pitch walk to junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.). With two outs, however, senior Dominique Dinner's (Monterey, Calif.) long fly ball was caught at the warning track by Watt in left field.

Watt then put San José State up, 3-0, with a two-run home run in the fourth.

SDSU threatened again in the sixth as senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) and Jackson each singled and moved up a base on a groundout by Cable. Spartan starter Allison Lang got the home team out of the jam as she struck out freshman Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside/El Camino HS) swinging out got Miles to ground out to second base.

SJSU scored its final runs when Caldwell's bases loaded double plated a pair of runners.

San Diego State had four hits in the game, including two by Jackson. Miles was 1-for-2 with a walk and Mathis also singled.

For the game, the Aztecs were 1-for-10 (.100) with runners on base and 0-for-7 (.000) with the bases loaded.

O'Toole (26-8) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. She struck out four.

Lang (10-4) allowed four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings, while striking out two.

The final game of the weekend series is slated to start at noon PT Sunday.
