COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Five San Diego State players have been named to the 2014 all-Mountain West baseball team including four first-team and one second-team selection. Second baseman Tim Zier and third baseman Ty France along with pitchers Bubba Derby and Michael Cederoth are first-team honorees while Brad Haynal earned second-team honors. The four first-team athletes represent the most for the Aztecs since the 2005 season.
France led the Aztecs in hitting in conference play with a .333 batting average (.364 overall) as he recorded 10 doubles and a pair of home runs in Mountain West action. He finished among the top four in the league in four offensive categories including doubles, run scored, on-base percentage and walks while also ranking among the top 14 in three other areas.
Zier hit .290 in league play (.330 overall) with seven doubles and 12 runs batted in. During the season he became San Diego State's all-time hit leader and will finish his Aztec career ranked among the top 20 in nine categories.
Derby went 5-2 in league play with a 3.13 earned run average while leading the Aztecs in both of those categories in Mountain West action. His ERA was sixth-best among league hurlers and he finished second in conference play in strikeouts and sixth in strikeouts looking.
Cederoth completed the league season with a 2-1 mark, eight saves and a 2.08 earned run average over 14 appearances. He led the conference in saves and opponents hit just .198 against him in MW action.
Haynal emerged as arguably the top defensive catcher in the conference while hitting .259 with nine home runs and 33 RBI in Mountain West play. His RBI total ranked first in league games and he finished second in home runs. He also topped the conference in sacrifice flies with five while his .563 slugging percentage ranked fourth.
San Diego State will open play at the Mountain West Tournament today (Wednesday, May 21) at 3:00 p.m. in Las Vegas when it faces the winner of the 11:00 a.m. contest between Air Force and San Jose State.
