FINAL STATS | SDSU 8, DARTMOUTH 0 (6 INN.) | HIGHLIGHTS
TEMPE, Ariz. - The San Diego State softball team run-ruled Dartmouth, 8-0, in six innings in an elimination game Saturday at the NCAA Tempe Regional in Tempe, Ariz. The Aztecs (40-18) will now play No. 13/13 Michigan (43-13) at 8 p.m. PT in another elimination game.
Senior Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.) and sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) got things going for SDSU in the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice to Dartmouth second baseman Kara Curosh, who tagged Downey while Dinner got to third. Junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) then cleared the bases with a home run over the center field fence. It was Jordan's third homer of the season and 10th of her career.
In the fourth, freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led off with a walk and was replaced by sophomore Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.). Freshman Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside/El Camino HS) moved Kobold to second on a groundout before junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) homered to right to put San Diego State up, 5-0.
Dinner then tripled down the right field line and scored on a passed ball. Ruiz later scored on a fielding error after a single by senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) to give the Aztecs a 7-0 lead.
SDSU completed the run-rule victory in the sixth inning as Downey singled and Ruiz followed with a double to advance San Diego State onto another meeting with the Wolverines.
The bottom three of the Aztec lineup - Dinner (2-for-3, 2 R, 3B), Downey (2-for-3, R) and Ruiz (2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, 2 2B, SB) each had six of SDSU's 10 hits in the game. Miles was 1-for-2 with the two-run homer and a walk, while Jordan had a three-run home run and a walk.
Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) got the win after allowing two hits and no walks over four scoreless innings, while striking out five. The left-hander improved to 31-9 on the season, giving her the single-season win record at San Diego State.
Freshman Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) tossed the final two innings, giving up three hits, while striking out three.
