SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team moved up two places into seventh after firing a collective even-par 288 on Friday during the second round of the 2014 NCAA Columbia Regional Championships at The Club at Old Hawthorne. Despite shaving six strokes off their score from yesterday, however, the Aztecs still remain six shots out of the coveted fifth spot with a 36-hole total of 6-over 582 on the par-72, 7,141-yard track.
The three-day tournament continues with final-round action on Saturday as the top five squads advance out of the regional into the NCAA championship series, scheduled for May 23-28, in Hutchinson, Kan. Arizona State currently occupies the fifth position at even-par 576, followed closely by Iowa State (+3), SDSU (+6) and Iowa (+9) with 18 holes to play.
Individually, Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) posted the Aztecs' lowest score of the second round with a 71. The SDSU sophomore notched four birdies on the day against three bogeys to climb nine places on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 21st with a 1-over 145, matching the combined total of junior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.).
After recording back-to-back bogeys on his front nine at Nos. 12-13, Schauffele righted the ship, notching 10 pars the rest of the way to with three birdies, including a successful conversion on his finishing hole, the par-5, 575-yard ninth. With their rounds, Michelini and Schauffele, both 2014 all-Mountain West honorees, find themselves three strokes out of the top 15 individually.
Meanwhile, Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) sits one shot in back of his aforementioned Aztec teammates after firing his second straight 73 on Friday. The reigning MW Freshman of the Year got off to a rocky start with a bogey and double-bogey, respectively, before reeling off four birdies and a par over his next five holes. Despite closing with another birdie at No. 9 as well, DeSantis slipped five spots into a tie for 27th at 2-over 146 as a trio of bogeys on the back nine quashed his momentum.
On the flip side, fellow classmate Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) made the SDSU biggest leap of the day, vaulting 14 places into a tie for 38th at 7-over 149 following a second-round 72. The Francis Parker High alumnus offset two bogeys with a pair of birdies, including a make on his first hole of the day--the par-5 No. 10--to shave five strokes off his total from Thursday.
Elsewhere, junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) also notched an opening birdie on No. 10, but was unable to duplicate that success the rest of the way, suffering five bogeys and a double-bogey to drop into a tie for 52nd at 8-over 152 after settling for a 78 on Friday.
With its blazing second-round total of 18-under 270, Arkansas (-17) forged a tie with Oklahoma State (-17) atop the team standings, followed by host Missouri (-15), which remains in contention just two strokes behind in third, while LSU (-1) is a distant fourth.
In the race for medalist honors, Mizzou's Hunter Kraus (-7) owns a slim one-shot advantage over three golfers, including Taylor Moore of Arkansas (-6), Arizona State's Max Rotluff (-6) and Jordan Niebrugge (-6) of Oklahoma State, while LSU's Smylie Kaufman (-5) and Ryan Zech (-5) of Missouri still find themselves in the hunt as well.
Final-round action at the Columbia Regional gets underway on Saturday, with San Diego State scheduled to tee off alongside Iowa and Virginia on hole No. 10, starting at 7:30 a.m. CT (5:30 a.m. PT).
