COLUMBIA, Mo. - The San Diego State men's golf team sits in ninth place after shooting a combined 6-over par 294 on Thursday during the first round of the 2014 NCAA Columbia Regional Championships at The Club at Old Hawthorne. With their result, the Aztecs find themselves just five shots behind fourth-place dwelling LSU (+1) and Arkansas (+1) as the top five teams advance to the NCAA championship series, May 23-28, in Hutchinson, Kan.

Individually, SDSU was led by Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) and Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.), both of whom landed in a tie for 22nd after carding an opening-round 73 on the par-72, 7,141-yard course layout.

Schauffele played steady golf for most of the day, tying for the top spot in the 75-player field with 15 pars, including seven straight to close off his round. The Aztec junior recorded just two blemishes on his scorecard--consecutive bogeys at Nos. 9-10--following his lone birdie of the morning on the par-4 fifth.

Not to be outdone, DeSantis finished strong with six pars down the stretch, sandwiched around a birdie on the par-5, 525-yard 15th, his third of the day. The 2014 Mountain West Freshman of the Year also enjoyed back-to-back conversions at the turn, but an untimely double-bogey at No. 11, which played as the most difficult hole on Thursday, stalled his momentum somewhat. Still, DeSantis and Schauffele remain just two strokes out of the top 10 on the individual leaderboard heading into Friday's second round.

In addition, sophomore Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) and junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) sit one shot in back of their SDSU teammates, occupying the 30th position, after each fired a 2-over 74.

Michelini managed to ease the sting of four bogeys with six pars and two birdies after the turn; however, Holley experienced the opposite fate, logging five bogeys on the back nine, including three straight to finish his round despite posting a team-high four birdies overall.

Rounding out the Aztec starting lineup freshman Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), who settled for a 5-over 77 on the day to tie for the 52nd spot. The SDSU freshman was plagued by inconsistency throughout, suffering seven bogeys against two birdies.

With four players among the top10 individually, Oklahoma State shot a blistering 16-under 272 to take command of the team standings, while host Missouri (-7) remains distant second, followed by third-place Virginia (-3). In addition to the aforementioned LSU and Arkansas squads, the Aztecs are battling Arizona State (+3), Iowa (+3) and Iowa State (+5) for the coveted fifth spot in the field of 14 schools.

OSU's Jordan Niebrugge fired a 7-under 65 on Thursday to open a two-stroke lead over teammate Talor Gooch (-5), while Hunter Kraus (-4) of Missouri and Virginia's David Pastore (-4) are tied for third in the race for medalist honors.

San Diego State is slated to tee off with Iowa and Iowa State for the second round of the NCAA Columbia Regional on Friday, beginning at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT) on the 10th hole.
