SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team topped UC Santa Barbara, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. The win marked head coach Gene Carswell's 150th career victory. Saturday's outcome brought SDSU's overall record to an even 9-9.
Doubles action started the day's competition with UCSB's Teague Hamilton and Andrew Riminton topping Thorsten Bertsch and Jona Menzier in the third spot, 8-6. Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens evened the doubles standing on the second court as the duo defeated Erik Johnsson and Miles Seeman, 8-6. Tobias Galskov and Ziad Sultan gave the Gauchos an early lead as they claimed the point by getting past Hunter Nicholas and Andranik Khachtryan, 8-4, in first doubles.
In singles play, Juan Florez evened the score by dismissing Seeman in the sixth position, 6-1, 6-2. In third singles, Gelbrich gave the Aztecs' their first lead of the day by handling Alexander Gryaznov, 6-4, 6-2. Fifth singles saw UCSB battle back as Hamilton knotted up the score once again by defeating Milen Ianakiev, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6. In the second spot, Nicholas put SDSU ahead by topping Sultan, 6-3, 7-6 (10). First singles saw Bertsch clinch the match for San Diego State as he downed Galskov, 6-3, 6-2. Despite the score being decided, Jebens and Johnsson continued to duel for the final point of the day with the Gaucho coming out on top, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.
Up next, the Aztecs will take on crosstown rival USD on April 9 at 3 pm.
