BRYAN, Texas - The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in sixth place after firing a collective 27-over par 603 on Saturday during the first two rounds of Texas A&M University's Aggie Invitational. With their performance, the 41st-ranked Aztecs sit one shot behind Kent State (+26) for the fifth position and two strokes in back of fourth-place Oklahoma State (+22) on the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Club.
Individually, SDSU was led by Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) and Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), both of whom ended the day in a tie for eighth place at 3-over 147. Schauffele drained consecutive birdies on the front nine of his morning round, but three bogeys after the turn and a double-bogey on his final hole--the par-4 No. 9--forced him to settle for a 76. The Aztec junior regrouped in the afternoon, however, sinking five additional birdies en route to a 71, which marked SDSU's lone round in red figures on the day.
Michelini, meanwhile, opened with an even-par 72, offsetting three bogeys with a trio of birdies, before carding a 75 over the second 18 holes on Saturday. The Aztec junior was just 1-over on the front nine in the afternoon, but three bogeys after the turn stalled his progress up the individual leaderboard. Still, Michelini managed to make birdie on the par-3, 192-yard No. 7, which played as the most difficult hole of the second round, and now sits along with Schauffele just one shot out of fifth place where three golfers are tied at 2-over.
Elsewhere, Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) landed in a seven-way tie for the 26th position at 8-over 152 following back-to-back cards of 76. The Carlsbad High alumnus was 5-over through nine holes during the morning session, before notching three birdies after the turn. However, an untimely double-bogey on the par-3 No. 7 thwarted his advance. Stung, DeSantis was unable to generate any momentum in the second round after experiencing six bogeys on his first 11 holes. However, the SDSU freshman finished strong with five pars and two birdies and now finds himself two shots out of the top 20 heading into Sunday's final round.
Rounding out the Aztec starting five were senior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) and freshman Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), who completed the first two rounds in tie for 49th and 70th spots, respectively. Despite closing with consecutive bogeys in the afternoon, Kaiser still managed to shave five strokes off his morning score, finishing with a 76 for a combined 13-over 144 on the day. Meanwhile, Mendoza struggled for most of the day, posting rounds of 87 and 84.
The Aztec contingent also featured junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.), an individual competitor who ended the day in a tie for 56th at 16-over 160 after shooting an 81 and 79, respectively.
LSU (+15) owns a slim one-stroke lead over host Texas A&M (+16) in the team standings, while Texas Tech (+21) occupies the third position with 18 holes left to play. Individually, California's Brandon Hagy (-3) catapulted to the top of the leaderboard with rounds of 71 and 70 to open a two-shot advantage over Ben Crancer of Texas A&M (-1), while Texas Tech's Clement Sordet (E) sits in third.
The Aggie Invitational concludes with the final round of competition on Sunday as San Diego State is scheduled to tee off alongside Oklahoma State and Kent State, beginning at 7:50 a.m. CT/5:50 a.m. PT.
