SAN DIEGO 5, SDSU 0 | SAN DIEGO 5, SDSU 0 | HIGHLIGHTS
The San Diego State softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to San Diego in a non-conference game Tuesday night at USD Softball Complex. Playing their seventh game in eight days and 10th game in 13 days, the Aztecs (34-16) are now 53-4 all-time against the Toreros (23-21).
USD struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two unearned runs off SDSU freshman starter Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah). Dana Prelsnik reached on an error and moved up a base one batter later on a single by Chloe Kaneko. After another popout, Olivia Sandusky ripped a double over San Diego State freshman left fielder Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside/El Camino HS) to score both runners and give San Diego the 2-0 lead.
In the second, the Toreros added another run when Kylie Ordos had a one-out double and Charly Swanberg followed with a single through the right side.
The Aztecs threatened in the third, getting two runners on base with singles by sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) and junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) with just one out. USD starter Jenny Lahitte, however, got senior Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.) to pop up and senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) to strike out looking to keep SDSU off the scoreboard.
Danielle Mavridis gave San Diego a 4-0 lead in the fourth when her single to right field plated Kylie McNutt.
San Diego State looked to score again in the sixth as Jackson and freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) drew leadoff walks and were replaced by pinch runners Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) and Jacki Campa (La Verne, Calif.). Ignacio, however, hit a hard grounder that was turned into a double play and moved Kobold to third. Lahitte (9-10) then got junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) to ground out to the Torero shortstop to end the inning.
USD tacked on its final run in the sixth when Swanberg drew a bases loaded walk.
Jordan had two of the Aztecs' four hits in the game, while Downey and Ignacio also singled. Jackson had two walks and now has 57 walks on the season in 50 games. Cable and Miles also walked for SDSU.
Smith (3-5) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits over 1 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out one without issuing a walk. Freshman Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) gave up two runs on four hits and a walk over four innings of relief with one strikeout. Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) yielded one walk in 2/3 innings in the sixth.
Lahitte tossed the complete game shutout, allowing four hits and four walks over seven innings. She struck out six.
San Diego State results Mountain West play this weekend at San Jose State, beginning with a 3 p.m. PT game on Friday.
