SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Brad Haynal had a pair of home runs and a two-run double to account for seven runs as San Diego State defeated San Jose State , 14-3, in the rubber game of their three-game weekend series at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon. With the win the Aztec improved to 31-13 (12-9 Mountain West) as they won for the 22nd time in 26 home contests in 2014.
SDSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Tyler Adkison's single was followed by Haynal's first long ball of the day, this one to left center field. After an out, the Aztec loaded the bases on two walks and single before Tim Zier laced a ball through the right side to bring home two runs. It would be the first of four hits including two doubles for the SDSU second baseman. Ty France's ground out to second brought home the final run of the frame and the home side had a 5-0 lead.
San Jose State 13-31 (7-17 MW) chipped away at that lead with a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth off Aztec starter Mark Seyler to make it a 5-3 contest, but SDSU took firm control of the contest with six runs in its half of the sixth to extend it advantage to 11-3.
That six-run outburst featured an RBI double by Zier and a two-run single by France before Haynal capped off the scoring with a three-run bomb to left.
When the Spartans began the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles it signaled the end of the afternoon for Seyler, who was lifted in favor of reliever Marcus Reyes. The freshman lefty got a double play and fly ball to center to end the threat.
Seyler's final line read seven-plus innings allowing three runs on 13 hits with two walks and six strikeouts. He would be credited with the victory to improve to 7-3.
San Diego State's final three runs came in its portion of the eighth inning as Haynal delivered a two-RBI double and advanced to third on the outfielder's throw to the play. Haynal then came home on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.
In the top of the ninth, after Reyes recorded the first two outs, the Aztec brought redshirt freshman CJ Saylor to the mound. Normally a catcher, it marked his SDSU pitching debut and he responded by striking out the lone batter he faced to end the game.
In addition to Haynal (three hits, seven RBI, three runs scored) and Zier (four hits, three RBI, run scored), center fielder Greg Allen also enjoyed a multiple-hit game as he recorded three singles and a walk with a pair of runs scored. Al nine players in the SDSU lineup had at least one hit with eight of them scoring one or more runs.
San Diego State will now be on the road for its next five contests beginning with a game at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, April 29, scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
