FRESNO, Calif. -
The San Diego State women's tennis team defeated San Jose State on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the Mountain West Championships. The third-seeded Aztecs downed the sixth-seeded Spartans, 4-2, in the postponed match, which was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon.
The match on court No. 3 was the first to finish as Tami Nguyen gave SDSU its first point. Nguyen dismissed Sabastian Leon Chao, 6-4, 6-1. In second singles, Gaelle Rey evened things up as she got past Kristin Buth, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. Court No. 1 saw the reigning conference player of the year, Laura Antonaña Iriarte, battle for San Diego State's second point. The senior ultimately took the decision from Marie Klocker, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Once again San Jose State would tie the score as Julianna Bacelar topped Kennedy Davis in the fourth position, 6-1, 6-4. The sixth slot saw Isabelle Hoorn put SDSU within a point of victory as she defeated Justine Deleval, 6-3, 6-2. The final and deciding point came in fifth singles which proved to be a duel between Dora Somoracz and Jessica Willett. The Aztec claimed the point and match with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
San Diego State will face second-seeded New Mexico at 5 pm this evening. The winner will advance to the championship match which will get underway at 10 am on Sunday.
