RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team dropped out of first place Friday into a tie for fifth after shooting a collective 20-over-par 308 during the second round of the 2014 Mountain West Championship at Mission Hills Country Club. The Aztecs added 15 strokes to their score from Thursday and now find themselves knotted with Boise State at 25-over 601 for the event, seven shots in back of fourth-place San José State (+18) with 18 holes left to play on the par-72, 6,324-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) posted SDSU's lowest score of the second round with a 73, but relinquished her share of the lead, tumbling into the fifth spot at even-par 144. The Aztec sophomore was dogged early on by a trio of bogeys, but rebounded nicely with seven pars and two birdies on the back nine to finish 1-over for the day. Despite the modest slide, Henrikson still remains in contention two shots behind the front-running quartet of New Mexico's Manon Molle, Gudrun Bjornvinsdottir and Madchen Ly of Fresno State and UNLV's Dana Finkelstein, all of whom sit at 2-under 142.

Likewise, junior Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshman Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) were unable to keep pace on the individual leaderboard as both golfers slipped into a tie for the 15th position at 7-over 151. After draining three birdies during the opening round, Spiranac could not duplicate that success with her putter Friday, suffering seven bogeys en route to a 79.

Meanwhile, Blair seemed poised make a move up the ladder following a her second straight birdie of the day at the par-4, 346-yard No. 6, which played as the second-toughest hole of the second round. However, an arduous stretch of three bogeys over her next four holes, followed by a double-bogey at No. 11, stymied her advance. Blair looked to restore order with a birdie on No. 15, but wound up settling for a 78 after another double-bogey on the ensuing hole proved too much to overcome.

Elsewhere, Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) matched Blair's 78, but still slipped six places into a tie for 30th at 11-over 155. The Aztec junior experienced early adversity on Friday with three bogeys and a double-bogey on the front nine before rebounding with a par and birdie following the turn. However, bogeys at Nos. 13 and 16 derailed her momentum.

Rounding out the SDSU contingent was Maria Fernanda Villegas (Ensenada, Mexico), who ended the day tied for 34th with a combined 13-over 157 after firing a 79. The Aztec freshman was just 2-over following a birdie on the par-3 No. 14, but two bogeys and an untimely triple-bogey down the stretch put a damper on her round.

Four schools are separated by just four strokes in the race for the team title as New Mexico (+14) assumed a two-shot advantage over second-place Fresno State (+16), while UNLV (+17), which posted a tournament-low 290 on Friday, and San José State (+18) remain in contention as well.

Final-round action at the MW Championship gets underway on Saturday, with San Diego State scheduled to tee off alongside San José State and Boise State, beginning at 7:45 a.m. PDT.
