SAN DIEGO -

SDSU 10, CSU 2 (5 INN.)

The San Diego State softball team run-ruled Colorado State, 10-2, in five innings in the series opener Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.

The win moved the Aztecs (33-14, 10-6 MW) into a four-way tie for second place in the Mountain West standings with the Rams (29-12, 10-6 MW), Boise State (26-19, 11-7 MW) and UNLV (21-2, 11-7 MW), all just 0.5 games back of Fresno State (26-17, 10-5 MW).

SDSU spotted CSU a run in the top of the first inning, then scored 10 straight times - four in the first, two in the second, third and fourth - before Colorado State scored one more run in the fifth to account for the 10-2 final score.

Senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a run, a double and a sacrifice fly to pace San Diego State, while junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) was 2-for-3 with three runs and a hit by pitch.

Senior Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.) and freshman Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside/El Camino HS) each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ignacio also scored twice for the Aztecs.

Sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) singled, drove in two runs, scored a run, stole a base and had a sac fly, junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) had an RBI double and a walk, and senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) walked twice and scored a run. Freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.), meanwhile, had two RBIs via sacrifice fly and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) picked up another win for SDSU, allowing two runs on nine hits, a walk and a hit batter, while striking out one. O'Toole (24-6) stranded nine Colorado State runners in the game.

San Diego State (10) only had one more hit than the Rams (9), but the Aztecs were 8-for-17 (.471) with runners on base, while CSU was 5-for-17 (.294).

Game two of the three-game series is set for 1 p.m. PT Saturday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
