TUCSON, Ariz. - San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) sits in second place on the individual leaderboard after firing a 3-under-par 68 on Friday during the opening round of the 2014 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. As a team, the Aztecs occupy the third position at 3-under 281, just one stroke behind UNLV (-4) and two shots in back of front-running New Mexico (-5) heading into Saturday's second round at the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course.
Michelini played spectacular bogey-free golf, recording 15 pars and three birdies, including an impressive make on the par-3, 247-yard No. 7, which registered as the most difficult hole on Friday. With his performance, the Aztec sophomore posted his seventh round of the season below par and finds himself just two strokes off the pace behind leader Carl Jonson of UNLV, who opened with a 66.
In addition, Ricky DeSanits (Carlsbad, Calif.) remains within striking distance after carding an opening-round 70. The Carlsbad High product was 1-over on the front after notching bogeys at Nos. 5 and 9, sandwiched around a birdie on the par-5 eighth. However, the SDSU freshman finished strong with seven pars and a pair of birdies, completing his first-ever conference tournament round in a six-way logjam for fifth.
Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) finds himself one shot behind DeSantis in a tie for 11th after logging an opening-round 71. The Scripps Ranch High alumnus was 2-under approaching the 18th tee after offsetting a trio of bogeys with five birdies, including back-to-back conversions at Nos. 10-11. However, an untimely double-bogey on his final hole put a damper on an otherwise solid effort.
The Aztec lineup also included junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and freshman Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), both of whom finished in a tie for 16th with a 1-over 72. Holley's round featured a vast array of scores, highlighted by a team-best six birdies, but also included two bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey. Mendoza, meanwhile, displayed more consistency, overcoming a three bogeys on the front nine with seven pars and two birdies after the turn.
Second-round action at the MW Championship gets underway on Saturday, with the Aztecs slated to tee off alongside UNLV and New Mexico, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PDT.
