AZUSA, Calif. - Nicole Oudenaarden finished in eighth place in the Mt. SAC portion of the heptathlon to lead the No. 18 San Diego State track and field team at the Mt. SAC Multi's Thursday in Azusa, Calif.
Oudenaarden finished the two-day, seven-event heptathlon with 5,721 points, which was good enough for eighth out of the 20 entrants and second among collegiate athletes. Teammate Allison Reaser was right behind Oudenaarden in ninth (and third collegian) with 5,647 points. Santa Barbara TC's Barbara Nwaba won the event with 6,043 points.
On the final day, Oudenaarden finished fifth in the long jump (19-09.75 (6.04m)), third in the javelin throw (146-03 (44.58m)) and 12th in the 800 meters (2:22.72). The 19-09.75 mark in the long jump was the ninth-best mark in program history.
Reaser, meanwhile, came in third in the long jump (19-11.75 (6.09m)), 15th in the javelin (114-07 (34.93m)) and sixth in the 800 (2:15.01). The 19-11.75 in the long jump was the sixth-best leap in school history.
In the CA Invite section of the heptathlon, which featured 50 entrants, the Aztecs' Karsen Sper tied for 18th with 4,618 points. Additionally, Sarah Haydock was 43rd at 3,474 in an event won by Michigan's Aaron Howell (5,362).
Today Sper tied for 16th in the long jump (17-05.25 (5.31m)), was 24th in the javelin (90-09 (27.67m)) and came in 22nd in the 800 (2:24.79), while Haydock tied for 45th in the long jump (15-06.25 (4.74m)), was 40th in the javelin (73-03 (22.22m)) and came in 43rd in the 800 (2:41.47).
SDSU has two athletes (Grace Hanshaw and Marianne Hogan) running the 10,000 at 11:15 p.m. tonight at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Those results will be posted on GoAztecs.com when they become available.
