Men's Tennis Takes Down Hawai'i, 5-2

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team earned a senior day victory over Hawai'i, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. It was the final career home match for seniors Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) and Juan Florez (Bogota, Colombia).

SDSU (10-11, 3-1 MW) took control of the match early on by sweeping doubles play to win the point. The Aztecs No. 2 team of sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) topped Jonathan Brooklyn and Carter Lam, 8-5, while the No. 1 duo of Nicholas and junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) knocked off Nils Schuhmann and David Schuster, 8-6.

San Diego State's No. 3 unit of Florez and junior Andranik Khachatryan (Burbank, Calif.) completed the sweep by defeating Pavel Liska and Chas Okamoto, 8-7 (4). It's the fourth time this dual season the Aztecs swept doubles play.

Singles action began with Jebens earning a victory over Danilo Casanova on the No. 4 court, 6-2, 6-0, and Khachatryan beat Schuster, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 5 slot. Bertsch took down Brooklyn, 6-0, 6-3, in No. 1 singles to clinch the dual-match victory, before Florez fell short against Liska, 6-3, 6-2.

Nicholas finished his Aztec home career with a three-set win over Schuhmann, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, in the No. 2 spot, while Gelbrich had his three-match winning streak in No. 3 singles snapped against Okamoto, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 10-5, to complete Wednesday's action.

San Diego State concludes the regular season on the road against UC Irvine on Saturday, April 19, in a dual match played at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach, Calif., beginning at 4 p.m. PT.
