SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - San Diego State's Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) fired a collective 2-under par 138 on Saturday to lead the Aztec men's golf squad during the first two rounds of the 68th annual Western Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. With his performance, the SDSU freshman sits just four shots off the pace in a four-way tie for seventh heading into Sunday's final round.
As a team, the Aztecs landed in the fourth position after recording a combined 9-over 709 (357-352) in the six-man tournament, just five strokes behind California (+4) and seven shots in back of Washington (+2), while Stanford (-4) leads the field of 14 schools.
DeSantis carded a 70 during the opening round, offsetting four bogeys with a quartet of birdies, before draining four additional birdies in the afternoon en route to a 68. With his effort, the Carlsbad High alumnus climbed 13 places on the individual leaderboard to finish the day as one of just 11 golfers in red figures.
Two other SDSU golfers find themselves among the top 20 after 36 holes, including junior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), who landed in a three-way tie for 11th at 1-under 139, whil freshman Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) sits two strokes behind in a six-man logjam for 18th at 1-over 141.
Schauffele was 3-over on the front nine of his morning round, but quickly regrouped with four birdies after the turn, including three straight on holes 15-17, to finish with a 69. The Scripps Ranch High product rode that momentum into the afternoon, sinking three birdies on his first 11 holes of the second round to get to 3-under for the day, until three consecutive bogeys stymied his advance. Still, Schauffele managed to right the ship with three pars and birdies.
Mendoza, meanwhile, posted scores of 72 and 69 on Saturday, highlighted by a collective seven birdies. The Francis Parker High alumnus found himself at 3-under with two holes remaining in the second round, but two straight bogeys thwarted his progress. Nevertheless, Mendoza tied his low score for the year, vaulting 24 spots from the 42nd position.
Elsewhere, Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) ended the day in a tie for 34th at 4-over 144 after logging rounds of 70 and 74. The Aztec sophomore tied for the tournament lead with 30 pars over the first 36 holes, but found birdies elusive, draining just one compared to five bogeys.
Rounding out the SDSU lineup was junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and senior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.). In just his second start of the season, Holley tied for the 60th position after firing a combined 8-over 148 following rounds of 76-72, highlighted by five birdies overall. Meanwhile, Kaiser sits in a tie for 75th at 10-over 150 on scores of 77-73.
The Aztecs were also represented by sophomore Michael Koeneke (San Diego, Calif.), an individual competitor who occupies the 60th spot with Holley after carding a 70 and 78, respectively. The Torrey Pines High graduate sank seven birdies on the day, but was unable to overcome a double-bogey at No. 6 and a triple-bogey on the 16th during the second round.
The Stanford duo of Cameron Wilson and Patrick Rodgers own a share of the individual lead, along with Trevor Simsby of Washington at 6-under 134, followed by USC's Rico Hoey (-4), while Cody Blick of host San José State (-3) and California's Joel Stalter (-3) remain tied for fifth.
San Diego State will wrap up play at the Western Intercollegiate on Sunday when it tees off with California on holes 3-5 in a shotgun start, beginning at 8:30 a.m. PDT.
