FRESNO STATE 2, SDSU 0 | VIDEO REPLAY
The San Diego State softball team was shut out by Fresno State, 2-0, Saturday night in Fresno, Calif. It was just the second time this year that the Aztecs (28-11, 5-3 Mountain West), who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, have been shut out.
SDSU only had three hits in the game off starter Hannah Harris.
San Diego State's best chance to score came in the top of the seventh inning when junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) drew a one-out walk and senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) followed with a single to right field. Freshman Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) was up next and drilled a ball to Bulldog (23-13, 8-3 MW) centerfielder Brenna Moss, who made a diving catch and doubled Miles off at second base to end the game.
FS got a run in the second when Whitney Smith doubled home Vonnie Martin. Martin later homered in the sixth for the final run of the game.
Mathis, junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita HS) and sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) each had the Aztecs' hits.
Freshman Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits and a walk over two innings of work. Freshman Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) pitched the middle 3 1/3 innings, surrendering one run on six hits with four strikeouts, while sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) gave up one hit and a walk in the final 2/3 innings.
The Aztecs now trail Fresno State by 1.5 games in the Mountain West standings.
The two teams wrap up their series at 1 p.m. PT Sunday.
