The San Diego softball team was edged by Fresno State, 5-4, Friday night at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, dropped to 28-10 (5-2 Mountain West) as a team, while the Bulldogs improved to 22-13 and 7-3 (MW).
Despite outhitting the home team, 7-6, SDSU only scored two runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the third. FS, however, answered with the final five scores of the game en route to the 5-4 win.
Senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) was 3-for-3 with three RBIs to pace the San Diego State offense. Junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) added two hits and a run, while senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) scored a run on a walk. Freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored twice and walked for the 26th time this season.
Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) took the loss after allowing just three earned runs (five total) on six hits and two walks over six innings. She struck out six.
The Aztecs and Fresno State play game No. 2 of the weekend series at 6 p.m. PT Saturday.
