The 75th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team fell behind early and came up just short of a rally against San Francisco on Wednesday. The Aztecs fell 4-3 to the Dons at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU's overall record falls to 9-11.
Current Mountain West Player of the Week, Laura Antonaña Iriarte and doubles partner Isabelle Hoorn, put SDSU up early as the duo downed Genevieve McCloskey and Milica Hadzi-Tanovic on the third court, 8-5. Thyra Tuane and Sofia Holmberg evened things up for San Francisco as they got past Kristin Buth and Kennedy Davis in second doubles, 8-4. Andrea Ka and Marina Nikolic clinched the point for the Dons as the duo topped Dora Somoracz and Hailey Johnson in the first spot, 8-4.
In singles action, Ka gave USF a two-point lead as she upset No. 44 Antonaña Iriarte in the first position, 6-1, 6-4. In second singles, Taune put the Dons one point away from victory as she defeated Buth, 6-3, 6-4. On court No. 6, Hoorn came fighting back for SDSU as she dismissed McCloskey, 6-2, 6-3. Fifth singles saw the deciding match as Hadzi-Tanovic claimed the win for San Francisco by getting past Somoracz, 6-1, 6-2. Despite the score, the Aztecs did not give up and subsequently posted two additional points. Tami Nguyen battled with Holmberg in third singles with Nguyen taking the point, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 10-3. In the final match of the day, Davis took Nikolic to the edge and came out victorious on court No. 4, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8.
No. 75 San Diego State will next face crosstown foe, UC San Diego, on Sunday at 2 pm at Aztec Tennis Center.
