SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team lost its first game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 7 Boston College, 18-11, in its home opener at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
SDSU (4-1, 2-0 MPSF) trailed by three at halftime, 8-5, and pulled within four when junior Christina Ricciardulli scored a goal off an assist from junior Michaela Jarvis to make it 13-9 with just over 13 minutes remaining. However, Boston College scored the contest's next four goals to extend its advantage to 17-9 with 2:14 left.
Although the Aztecs were competitive against a top-10 team that has two returning All-Americans on its roster, head coach Kylee White wasn't satisfied with the result and refused to settle for a moral victory.
"I'm disappointed we got an opportunity to play a top-7 team and we didn't play the kind of lacrosse we're capable of," White said. "Unlike other games this season we didn't play as a team, which is very uncharacteristic of this program.
"We had some good moments that we hope to build on for the next game, but we need to figure out how to play for 60 minutes."
Ricciardulli scored a team-high four goals with three groundballs and three draw controls for San Diego State, including the game's first goal just 26 seconds into the contest to put the Aztecs ahead, 1-0. Junior Bailey Ewing and freshman Vickie Porter scored two goals apiece, while junior Lauren Maack recorded a goal, two assists and two groundballs.
SDSU had a 15-12 advantage in groundballs, and forced nine Boston College turnovers in the first half alone, but the Eagles had a 19-11 edge in draw controls (10-4 in first half) that kept the ball in BC's possession the majority of the day. Boston College out-shot San Diego State for the game 27-20.
After the Aztecs took an early lead, Boston College scored three-straight goals to go ahead by two, and followed Ewing's unassisted goal with another three-goal scoring spurt to lead, 6-2, with 11:31 remaining in the first half. The two teams exchanged the next 10 goals, as Porter's score off a pass from Maack made it 10-7 before the Eagles scored three-straight to push their lead to 13-7 with 19:01 left to play.
Boston College junior Covie Stanwick, a returning All-American, finished with a game-high five goals and two assists, while fellow All-American junior Mikaela Rix recorded two goals and two assists.
San Diego State returns to action on Wednesday, March 12, as the Aztecs play host to LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m. PT at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
