STANFORD, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team wrapped up play at The Goodwin on Sunday, tying for 16th-place with a combined 37-over par 877 at Stanford Golf Course. Despite shaving two strokes off their collective second-round score, the Aztecs slipped four spots after shooting a 17-over 297 during the final 18 holes on the par-70, 6,727-yard track.
Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) logged SDSU's best finish, tying for the 34th position at 5-over 215, following a final-round 68. The Aztec sophomore lowered his score for the second day in row, draining four birdies, including three straight on holes 6-8, to climb 19 spots on the individual leaderboard.
In addition, Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) managed to trim two shots off his second-round total after firing a 76 on Sunday. Despite offsetting three bogeys with a pair of birdies, the SDSU freshman still tumbled 23 places in to a tie for 55th at 9-over 219, thanks in part to a double-bogey on his first hole, the par-4, No. 10, and a triple-bogey on the par-5 No. 12.
Meanwhile, junior Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) was shut out in the birdie department for the second day in row, carding a final-round 78 to finish the tournament tied for 65th with a combined 11-over 221. The Scripps Ranch High product carded 13 pars for the day against three bogeys, but a triple-bogey on the par-5, 500-yard No. 16, his seventh hole of the round, and a double-bogey at No. 5 hastened his descent from the 32nd spot.
Elsewhere, Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) also came up empty with his putter, notching 12 pars compared to six bogeys en route to a 76. With his round, the Aztec senior slipped six slots into a tie for 85th at 17-over 227.
The SDSU contingent also featured redshirt freshman Gunn Yann (Pyeong Chang, South Korea), who completed his first varsity start of the season in a tie for 87th at 21-over 231 after firing a 77 over the final 18 holes.
With three golfers finishing among the individual top five, host Stanford (-25) coasted to the team title, easily outdistancing co-runners-up USC (-5) and UCLA (-5), while Washington (-1) landed in the fourth position, followed by Oregon (+3) and UAB (+3).
The Cardinal's wire-to-wire leader Patrick Rodgers took home medalist honors with a combined 14-under 196, winning by six shots over second-place Rico Hoey of USC (-8), while teammate Cameron Wilson (-6) took third.
San Diego State returns to the course next weekend when it travels to the Lone Star State for the Aggie Invitational, April 5-6, at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
