SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field team won three individual events Friday at the 36th annual Aztec Invitational in San Diego.

Kortney Ross, Melissa Wendorf and Meritzer Williams all won their open events on day two of the three-day meet.

Ross beat out 11 other entrants in the open pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 5 ½ inches (3.80m). Wendorf took first-place honors in the open 5,000 meters out of 19 entrants with a time of 19 minutes, 7.47 seconds. Williams, meanwhile, came in first in the open 100 in 11.91, beating a remarkable 56 other entrants.

The Aztecs added six other top-five performance in the open events on the day, including Allison Reaser in the long jump (second, 18-08.50 (5.70m)) and javelin throw (third, 113-01 (34.48m)), Janice George in the 400 (third, 57.29), Brittany Bozeman in the 100 hurdles (third, 15.05), Starlynn Singleton (third, 35-10.00 (10.92m)) in the triple jump and Renetia James in the 400 (fourth, 57.87).

Karsen Sper, meanwhile, finished the two-day heptathlon in third place with 4,863 points.

SDSU also shined in the invitational events, especially in the 5,000. In the 5K, which was won by Shannon Payne (adidas/BRC) in 17:08.57, San Diego State took second (Grace Hanshaw, 17:46.21), third (Jessica McCall, 17:48.34), fourth (Marianne Hogan, 17:55.21) and fifth (Rachel Roesgen, 18:13.21).

Katie Thralls came in eighth in the invitational 3K, which was one by Nike's Lea Wallace (9:43.36), in 10:53.59, while Jasmine Burrell (seventh, 174-02 (53.08m)) and Mikayla Howden (10th, 159-03 (48.54m)) each finished in the top 10 of the invitational hammer throw.

Almost all of Saturday will be invitational and high school events, the latter which will be nationally sanctioned this year for the first time and high school athletes from across the country can compete. The invitational events get underway at 9 a.m. PT with the women's discus throw and on the track at 10:10 a.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. The high school competitions, meanwhile, start at 9 a.m. PT with the girl's shot put and on the track at 9:30 a.m. PT with the girl's 4x100 relay.

The senior recognition ceremony, which will honor each of the departing San Diego State athletes, is set for 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday.
