STANFORD, Calif. - San Diego State freshman Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) fired a season-low 5-under par 65 on Friday to lead the Aztec men's golf squad during the first round of The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course. As a team, SDSU occupies the seventh position out of 18 schools after carding a collective 1-over 281 on the par-70, 6,727 course layout.

With his performance, DeSantis finds himself alone in second place on the individual leaderboard after draining seven birdies overall, including three straight on his front nine at holes 15-17, to finish the day just two shots behind Patrick Rodgers (-7) of the host Cardinal heading into Saturday's second round.

Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) was the only other Aztec to break par on Friday, posting a 1-under 69, highlighted by four birdies, to land in a tie for the 17th spot. With his effort, the SDSU junior has now recorded red numbers in seven consecutive rounds.

Meanwhile, Gunn Yang (Pyeong Chang, South Korea) ended the day in a tie for 58th after shooting a 1-over 73 in his first start of the season. The Aztec redshirt freshman offset three bogeys on the front nine with a trio of birdies, but a double-bogey on the par-4 No. 2, followed by a bogey at No. 6, thwarted his climb back into contention.

Elsewhere, Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) sits one stroke in back of Yang in a tie for 66th following an opening-round 74. The SDSU sophomore tallied four bogeys on the front nine before making the last of his three birdies on the day following the turn at No. 1. However, Michelini was unable to sustain the momentum, suffering a bogey on No. 3 and a double-bogey at No. 6, which played as the two toughest holes, respectively, on Friday.

The Aztec lineup also featured senior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), who fired a 7-over 77, ending the day in a tie for 86th.

With four counting golfers shooting par or better, Stanford (-12) opened up a three-stroke lead over Bay Area neighbor Saint Mary's (-9) in the team standings, while fellow Pac-12 rivals Oregon (-7), UCLA (-3) and USC (-2) round out the top five.

Following Rodgers and DeSantis on the individual leaderboard, a quartet of players are deadlocked for the third position at 4-under, including USC's Rico Hoey, Brandon McIver of Oregon, Stanford's Maverick McNealy and Cody Robinson of Saint Mary's. In all, a total of 25 golfers in the field of 92 competitors broke par.

The Goodwin continues with round-two action on Saturday as the Aztecs are scheduled to tee off alongside Northwestern and TCU on hole 1, starting at 8 a.m. PT.
