Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) tossed a complete-game seven-hit shutout to lead San Diego State to a 5-0 shutout over Cal State Northridge Wednesday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, improved to 25-9 with the victory and have now won 14 of their last 16 games.
O'Toole (18-4) allowed seven hits (all singles), a walk and a hit batter over seven scoreless innings. She struck out seven and now has four solo shutouts this season (also one combined shutout). O'Toole stranded nine Matadors (22-10) in the game.
The SDSU offense backed O'Toole with five runs on 11 hits and four walks.
San Diego State struck first in the bottom of the third inning when senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) had a two-out double and scored when senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) followed with a triple down the right field line.
The Aztecs added four more scores in the fourth thanks to four hits, four CSUN errors, two walks, a stolen base and a wild pitch. SDSU's RBIs in the inning went to senior Dominque Dinner (Monterey, Calif.), sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) and sophomore Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.), while the runs were scored by junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS), junior Kaitlin Connors (San Diego/La Costa Canyon HS), Dinner and Ruiz.
Jordan had three hits and stole three bases to lead San Diego State, which left 11 on base and has now left 10 or more runners on in each of its past four games.
Jackson had two hits, including a double, a run and a walk. Bufardeci was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ruiz added two hits.
The Aztecs resume Mountain West play with a three-game series at SDSU Softball Stadium against Nevada from April 4-6.
