The San Diego State softball team defeated New Mexico, 11-3, Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs have matched their best start in school history at 24-8 (2-0 MW), and have won six straight games and 13 of their last 14 contests.
SDSU trailed, 2-1, after two innings, but put up five scores in the third, two in the fifth and three in the seventh to open up an 11-2 lead. The Lobos (9-20, 0-2 MW) scored one in the seventh for the final run of the game.
San Diego State pounded out 12 hits, including home runs by junior Kaitlin Connors (San Diego/La Costa Canyon), senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS). Connors had a three-run homer in the third (her fourth of the season), Jackson a two-run homer in the seventh (her 12th) and Jordan a solo home run in the seventh (her first).
Jackson finished 1-for-2 with the two-run homer and three walks, while freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) (2-for-5, double, two RBIs), freshman Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside/El Camino HS) (2-for-4, double, two runs, walk), Connors (2-for-5, 3 RBIs, run) and sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) (2-for-3, RBI, run, walk) added two hits apiece.
Freshman Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) picked up the win for the Aztecs, allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits, two walks and a hit batter. The right-hander struck out three and is now 4-3 on the season.
SDSU wraps up its three-game series with UNM at 1 p.m. MT Sunday.
