Junior Kayla Jordan's (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) walkoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored redshirt freshman Sam Vlot (Chowchilla, Calif.) to give the San Diego State softball team a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Texas Tech Sunday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Down 4-2 heading into the final inning, the Aztecs (20-8) scraped together three runs on two hits and three walks to escape with the victory. Freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) drew a walk and was replaced by sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS). Sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) followed with another walk and each runner moved up a base on a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) cleared them with a double down the right field line on a 3-2 pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) was intentionally walked and Vlot pinch ran for Jackson at second. Jordan ended the game when she drove a 0-1 pitch to left-center field for the game-winning hit.
SDSU had rallied from 2-0 deficit earlier in the game when sophomore Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.) drove in Miles in the second on a play that was mishandled by the Red Raider (22-8) third baseman.
San Diego State tied it in the third as Cable's single up the middle plated senior Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.).
TTU, however, used a three-hit sixth inning to score two more runs and take a 4-2 lead heading into the decisive seventh.
Aztec sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) retired Texas Tech in order, setting the table for SDSU's three-run seventh, which all came with no outs.
O'Toole (16-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and no walks, while striking out five in the victory.
Cable reached safely on three of her four plate appearances with a single, walk and a hit by pitch. Jackson and Miles each added a hit and a walk.
San Diego State, which is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls, has now won nine of its past 10 games.
The Aztecs will wrap up their play in the San Diego Classic II at 6 p.m. PT Monday against Harvard.
