The San Diego State men's golf team shot a 4-under 284 on Friday in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament at the par 72, 7,094-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Club. After 18 holes, the Aztecs are tied for fourth with UNLV.

Nahum Mendoza III was the top SDSU player in the first round after matching his season-low score with a 3-under 69. Mendoza had five birdies and two bogeys on the day and is tied with four others for eighth place.

Two other San Diego State players are in the top 20, including Xander Schauffele and Riccardo Michelini. Schauffele, who is coming off a victory at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic earlier in the week, fired a 2-under 70, which has him tied for 12th with four other golfers. He had four birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Michelini, meanwhile, is one shot back of Schauffele and tied for 17th after firing a 1-under 71. Michelini had four birdies and three bogeys in the first round.

Rounding out the Aztecs' foursome was Ricky DeSantis and Austin Kaiser, who both are in a tie for 44th after shooting a 2-over 74. DeSantis had four birdies, but also four bogeys and a double bogey. Kaiser matched DeSantis' 74 with three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.

SDSU, which is ranked 38th, is tied with No. 23 UNLV at 284 (-4), three shots ahead of No. 17 Texas A&M and Marquette (1-under 287). Third-ranked California leads after one round with a 20-under 268, followed by Arizona (7-under, 281) and No. 2 Oklahoma State (6-under, 282).

The second round of the National Invitational Tournament continues Saturday with San Diego State teeing off with Texas A&M and UNLV starting at 8:45 a.m. MT.
