SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team set a new program record for most goals scored in a game on Wednesday evening, defeating LIU Brooklyn, 22-6, at Aztec Lacrosse Field.

SDSU (5-1, 2-0 MPSF) had 13 different players score a goal, led by three each from senior Meris Walsh, junior Lauren Maack and freshman Vickie Porter. The Aztecs also posted a program-best 44 shot attempts and 24 draw controls.

San Diego State's previous high for goals scored came against the same LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds nearly one year ago to the day, in a 21-1 home victory on March 10, 2013. The 44 shots surpassed the 41 recorded in a 20-9 win at Saint Mary's on March 2, while the 24 draw controls passed the 21 tallied in an 18-8 victory at Fresno State last season.

The Aztecs outshot LIU Brooklyn 44-16 for the game, including 22-5 in the second half as they pulled away. SDSU had a 24-6 edge in draw controls, an 18-10 advantage in groundballs and caused 18 LIU turnovers while committing only 12.

Sophomore Felice Artuso scored two goals with three groundballs and two caused turnovers, junior Michaela Jarvis finished with two goals and an assist, and freshman Kristen Hickey added her first two career goals along with a team-high four draw controls. Freshman Sarah Dorl and redshirt sophomore Brittany Parrish also scored their first-career goals, while junior Jade Jones picked up a team-high four groundballs and Maack had a team-best three caused turnovers.

SDSU's offensive outburst began with sophomore Andrea Killebrew's unassisted goal late in the first half, which put the Aztecs ahead at halftime, 9-5. It was still a tight game at that point, but San Diego State received some motivation during intermission before scoring the first 12 goals of the second half to push its lead to 21-5.

"We had a very good halftime speech about teams that believe they can win," head coach Kylee White said. "I think LIU Brooklyn had a belief that they could win this game. They capitalized on our mistakes, and it was giving them momentum. We needed to step up our game and give them respect by playing our best.

"I really respect LIU and the way they played with heart and hustled. We weren't trying to be nice (in the first half). They fought hard and made it feel like a good win for us."

The Aztecs return to action on Sunday, March 16, as they resume Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play at home against UC Davis, beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
