CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -
Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout and senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) slugged her seventh home run of the season to give the San Diego State softball team a 6-0 victory over Oklahoma State Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in both national polls, improved to 10-5 on the year, while the Cowgirls dropped to 10-5.
O'Toole (9-2) held OSU hitless through 4 1/3 innings until Danielle Riddle singled up the middle. For the game, O'Toole allowed three hits (all singles) and hit a batter over seven innings. The left-hander struck out nine batters, one off her career high, without issuing a walk.
SDSU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) followed with a homer, her second straight game with one and her seventh of the season in 15 games.
San Diego State struck again with three runs in the fifth thanks to singles by seniors Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) and Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.), three wild pitches, two walks (Cable and Jackson), a stolen base (junior Jacki Campa (La Verne, Calif.), a passed ball and an error.
The Aztecs tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Dinner's single scored sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS).
Dinner, Jackson and sophomore Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) (2-for-2) each had two hits for SDSU, which outhit Oklahoma State, 7-3. Amazingly, Cable drew four walks in the game.
San Diego State returns to America's Finest City this weekend for the San Diego Classic I. The Aztecs will play host to Brigham Young (3:30 p.m. PT) and Tennessee (6 p.m. PT) on Thursday, Ole Miss at 7 p.m. PT Friday and Utah at 7 p.m. PT Saturday.
