DAVIDSON, N.C. - The San Diego State women's lacrosse team began the 2014 season with a promising start, picking up a road victory over Davidson, 11-10, on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

It's the first time in the program's three seasons the Aztecs have won their season opener, as SDSU jumped out to a 9-3 lead at halftime before hanging in the second half on for the win.

"We started out the game exactly how we wanted - playing fast and together," SDSU head coach Kylee White said. "We kept our composure in the last couple minutes to seal the win, but we'll be analyzing what happened during (Davidson's) run. We're excited to start the season off with a win and are now looking forward to playing Winthrop (on Monday)."

Senior Meris Walsh, junior Bailey Ewing and sophomore Andrea Killebrew scored two goals apiece for the Aztecs, while junior Michaela Jarvis and sophomore Felice Artuso each recorded a goal and an assist. Juniors Christina Ricciardulli, Lauren Maack and freshman Vickie Porter also scored one goal, while freshman goalkeeper Katrina Reeves tallied four saves, seven groundballs and caused two turnovers to earn the victory in her first-ever collegiate game.

In addition, junior Grace Korandovich recorded three groundballs and caused three turnovers, while junior Jade Jones had three groundballs with two caused turnovers, and Ricciardulli finished with five draw controls. The Aztecs out-shot Davidson 23-21, had a 28-16 edge in groundballs and forced 24 turnovers while committing only 18.

San Diego State raced out to an early 2-0 lead behind Ewing's free-position shot and Jarvis' unassisted goal, and pushed its advantage to 7-1 when Killebrew's goal off a pass from Artuso capped off a 5-0 scoring spurt with 13:55 remaining in the first half. Arutuso's unassisted goal with 8:16 remaining in the game put the Aztecs ahead, 11-7, before Davidson responded with three-straight scores to cut SDSU's lead to one with 2:39 left to play.

The Aztecs return to action on Monday, Feb. 17, as they play at second-year program Winthrop beginning at noon ET in a game that was originally scheduled for Friday.
