The San Diego State softball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 4-2 loss to Texas State Saturday afternoon at the 24th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs dropped to 7-2 with the loss, while the Bobcats improved to 6-2 with a game against No. 23/25 California still to play tonight.
SDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases with one out on walks by senior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.), senior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.). Freshman Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) followed with a single to score Mathis and Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.).
TSU got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Jordan Masek's single plated Kortney Koroll.
The following inning, Texas State put the game away when Koroll hit a three-run homer with two outs over the center field wall.
San Diego State got a runner on base in both the fifth and sixth inning, but was unable to get anyone into scoring position.
The Aztecs, who were outhit, 11-4, in the game got hits from Cable, sophomore Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS), Mathis and freshman Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.). Jackson was walked three times in three plate appearances and now has 12 walks in 32 plate appearances this year.
Freshman Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over 1 2/3 innings, while striking out three. Freshman Andi Smith (Orangeville, Utah) got her first career start and gave up one unearned run on six hits over four innings. The right-hander struck out three without issuing a walk. Sophomore Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) tossed the final scoreless 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and a walk.
SDSU wraps up its play in the Campbell/Cartier Classic at 1 p.m. PT Sunday against Saint Mary's.
