FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The San Diego State women's basketball team ran into a buzz saw Saturday, falling to hot-shooting Colorado State, 95-48, in a Mountain West game at Moby Arena.
With the loss, the Aztecs had their modest two-game winning streak snapped, slipping to 7-11 on the year and 4-4 in conference play, while the Rams captured their fifth straight to maintain their hold on first place in the MW standings with a 16-4 overall record and an 8-1 mark in league action.
CSU connected on 35 of 63 field-goal attempts (55.6 percent), highlighted by a blistering 19-for-35 clip (54.3 percent) from three-point range. In addition, the Rams scored 29 points off 24 Aztec turnovers and handed out a whopping 31 assists to help key their win.
Senior Danesha Long (Long Beach, Calif.) led SDSU with 16 points, while freshman Ariell Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) tallied 15 points, including a pair of late triples, but it wasn't enough as the Aztecs were plagued by cold shooting throughout the afternoon. The Scarlet and Black drained just 29 percent of their tries from the floor (17-59) and were outscored 34-5 in points off the bench.
Long nailed a three-ball in the game's opening moments and soon added a jumper to give SDSU an early 5-3 lead. However, the Rams gradually seized control over the ensuing 10 minutes as a three-pointer by Sam Martin at the 8:31 mark capped a 26-9 blitz that put the hosts up 29-14. The Aztecs responded with a trey by sophomore Deajanae Scurry (Los Angeles, Calif.) and a free throw by senior Cierra Warren (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), but consecutive layups by Elin Gustavsson and Ellen Nystrom snuffed out SDSU's momentum.
CSU kept firing on all cylinders and by halftime, the Aztecs faced their largest deficit at intermission this season, 47-26. The Rams showed no signs of letting up, opening the second half with a 22-5 run to build a commanding 69-31 advantage with just under 12 minutes left to play.
AJ Newton tossed in a game-high 23 points to pace CSU, including a brilliant 7-for-10 performance from beyond the three-point arc, while Martin contributed 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. In addition, Nystrom reached double-digits with 10 points, while Gustavsson and Haley Thompson finished with nine apiece.
SDSU will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when it welcomes Boise State to Viejas Arena for a 6 p.m. PT opening tip.
