MALIBU, Calif. -
Despite an upset in first singles, the 48th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team was unable to build enough momentum to top No. 44 Pepperdine on Saturday. Four of the five ranked Waves singles players proved too much for the Aztecs with Pepperdine posting a 6-1 win. With the loss SDSU now stands at 3-3 on the season.
Doubles play got the day underway as the 40th-ranked duo of Yuki Chiang and Michaela Capannolo defeated Hailey Johnson and Dora Somoracz on the second court, 6-2. Ale Granillo and Matea Cutura clinched the point for the Waves in third doubles as they topped Kennedy Davis and Isabelle Hoorn, 6-1. The close match on court No. 1 between Lorraine Guillermo and Christine Maddox of Pepperdine and Laura Antonaña Iriarte was left unfinished at 4-3 as the point was previously decided.
The Waves entered singles play with five out of six singles players nationally ranked. Senior Antonaña Iriarte pulled a major upset in first singles as she put San Diego State on the board and took down No. 19 Guillermo in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. On court No. 3, Tami Nguyen took the first set and forced a 10-point tiebreaker before coming up short to 93rd-ranked Granillo. In second singles No. 79 Cutura topped Buth, 6-4, 6-2. Court No. 4 would see a similar result as 112th-ranked Capannolo defeated Davis, 6-0, 6-1. In fifth singles, Somoracz fell short to No. 117 Chiang, 6-3, 6-1. Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai also notched a point for Pepperdine as she defeated Hoorn, 6-2, 6-4, in sixth singles.
San Diego State will get back on the courts when it returns home to Aztec Tennis Center on Monday, Feb. 10 at 2 pm.
