HOUSTON - The quartet of Dynasty Gammage, Maderia Toatley, Chelsea Kruthers and Rachel Roesgen set a school record in the distance medley relay to lead the San Diego State track and field team Friday at the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multi's in Houston.
Gammage (1,200 meters), Toatley (400), Kruthers (800) and Rosegen (1,600) combined to run a time of 12 minutes, 5.71 seconds, easily breaking the school record of 12:13.23 set in 2005. The Aztecs ended up finishing second out of 10, trailing only Texas State's 11:50.94.
Two other SDSU athletes posted individual wins on the first of the two-day meet, including Allison Reaser in the pentathlon and Jasmine Burrell in the weight throw.
Reaser totaled 3,868 points over the five events of the pentathlon, narrowly defeating teammate Nicole Oudenaarden's 3,846. Karsen Sper, meanwhile, came in fifth out of the 10 entrants.
Reaser took the early lead by winning the 60 hurdles in 8.57, while Sper (8.99) came in third and Oudenaarden (9.09) was fifth. Reaser also had San Diego State's best high jump mark, clearing 5 feet, 4 ½ inches (1.64m) for a tie for fourth. Both Sper and Oudenaarden tied for sixth in the event in 5-02.25 (1.58m).
Next up was the shot put, where Oudenaarden won with a mark of 43-06.00 (13.26m), followed by Reaser in third (36-05.75 (11.12m)) and Sper in eighth (30-04.75 (9.26m)). Oudenaarden made it two straight wins with the top leap in the long jump of 18-08.50 (5.70m). Reaser was right behind in second at 18-04.50 (5.60m) and Sper came in fifth in 16-11.25 (5.16m).
With a slight 10-point lead heading into final event of the grueling pentathlon, Reaser won the 800 in 2:25.48, just ahead of Oudenaarden's 2:26.38. Sper came in the fifth in 2:31.07. Reaser, a senior and six-time MW champion in the multi-events (2011-13 indoor pentathlon, 2011-13 outdoor heptathlon), has now beaten Oudenaarden, a sophomore, by a total of just 24 points over their two career meetings in the pentathlon.
Burrell, who on Tuesday was named the MW Co-Athlete of the Week, continued her early season success as she won the weight throw out of 31 entrants with a toss of 63-09.75 (19.45m).
Kristen Brown had another good outing, tying for second (out of 20) in the pole vault at 12-08.25 (3.87m) and qualifying for Saturday's semifinals in the 60 hurdles in 8.54. The 8.54 was the second-fastest time of the qualifying heats, which featured 45 entrants.
Holly Waseloff cracked the top 10 in the pole vault by taking eighth at 12-02.50 (3.72m), while Mertizer Williams qualified for Saturday's semifinals in the 60 by taking 16th in the prelims with a time of 7.63. Williams missed cracking the Aztec all-time top 10 by just 0.01 seconds (7.62 is No. 10).
SDSU is back in action Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. CT with the shot put. The two-day meet concludes at 4:50 p.m. CT with the 4x400 relay.
