SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State swimming and diving turned in the top marks in 12 of 16 events Saturday afternoon as it defeated the University of San Diego, 144-126, at the Aztec Aquaplex. The contest was the final dual meet of the 2013-14 campaign for SDSU which finishes with a record of 11-0.
Whitney Weisz led the way for San Diego State as she captured three individual races and was a member of a winning relay team. The sophomore from Little Falls, Minn., began her day by winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:52.19. She then took first in the 50 freestyle in 23.77, a mark that is the seventh-fastest time ever recorded at the Aztec Aquaplex. Weisz alter added a victory in the 100 freestyle (51.96) before wrapping up the meet as part of the winning 400 free relay team that went 3:28.39, the eighth-fastest time for the event at the Aquaplex.
The Aztecs' also had a pair of individual event double winners in Laura Day and Anika Apostalon. Day won both the 100 breaststroke (1:05.05) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.09) races while Apostalon claimed first place in the 200 backstroke (2:01.70) and 100 butterfly (56.21). The latter's two victories came in times that ranks as the third-best (200 back) and eighth-best (200 fly) at the SDSU facility.
Day and Apostalon were also both members of the opening 200 medley relay squad, and along with teammates Frida Berggren and Maddy Dalcamo recorded a winning mark of 1:46.08. Apostalon also swam on the victorious 400 freer relay team.
SDSU's other swimmer to record a win was Chelsea Bailey, who took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.90.
On the diving side, two different Aztec freshmen turned in the high scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with a third finishing second in both events.
On the 1-meter board, first-year Aztec Marlee Kersting captured top spot with a score of 251.03 with fellow frosh Shannon Finigan winning the 3-meter competition with a mark of 281.70. Finigan's score was good enough to qualify for the Zone Diving Meet in mid-March. Chandlers Marshall finished second on both boards with scores of 242.78 and 243.90 respectively.
While the SDSU swimmers will not be in action again until the Mountain West Championships in three weeks, the Aztec divers will compete next weekend (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) at the Air Force Diving Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. The entire team will be in San Antonio, Texas for the conference championships which run Feb. 19-22 at the Palo Alto College Aquatics Center.
