SAN DIEGO - Athlon Sports predicted the San Diego State football team to finish tied for second place in the West Division of the Mountain West and play in the Poinsettia Bowl for the third time in four years, in its 2013 College Football Preview magazine.
The publication anticipates SDSU to finish the season with a 7-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in conference play, and appear in the Poinsettia Bowl against Arizona. The Aztecs are envisioned to have the top-ranked linebacker corps in the conference, the second-ranked running back unit, the third-ranked defensive line and fourth-ranked secondary. Athlon Sports has SDSU ranked No. 64 in the nation to begin the season, with the third-rated recruiting class in the Mountain West.
Junior running back Adam Muema (Covina, Calif.), junior linebacker Jake Fely (Oceanside, Calif.) and senior safety Nat Berhe (Colton, Calif.) were each named preseason first-team all-MW, while junior defensive tackle Sam Meredith (La Mesa, Calif.), junior linebacker Derek Largent (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and senior kick returner Colin Lockett (Diamond Bar, Calif.) were tabbed second-team all-conference.
Muema has already been named first-team all-MW by Sporting News and Phil Steele this summer, in addition to landing a spot on the Doak Walker and Maxwell Award Watch Lists.
Fely has also earned first-team MW honors from Phil Steele and Sporting News, in addition to being named to the Bednarik Award and Lombardi Award Preseason Watch Lists. Meanwhile, Berhe has garnered first-team all-MW accolades from Phil Steele and Sporting News, along with landing on the Thorpe Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch Lists.
Meredith and Lockett were both second-team all-MW selections by Phil Steele earlier this summer, while Largent was a third-team selection.
