COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Forty-nine San Diego State student-athletes recently earned honors from the Mountain West Conference for their work in the classroom. Aztecs from 14 different sports were named 2012-13 Scholar-Athletes, with each having a cumulative grade point average over 3.5.
SDSU athletes who were honored for the second-consecutive year include Greg Allen, TJ Kendzora, Marianne Hogan, Josefine Koskinen, D.J. Shields, Falon Manns, Isabelle Pickett, Chandler Cole, Jennifer Miller, Kate Raymond, Kody Duff, Marisa Fraticelli, Katie Mathis, Amanda Barrett, Gemma Johnson, Mikaela Macklin, Kristin Buth, Sarah Haydock, Rebecca Turnbow, Andrea Hannasch, Courtney Vaccarello and Anique Hermann.
Seniors Koskinen (Women's Cross Country) and Shields (Football) each earned the award for the fourth-straight year.
This year, a league-record 623 student-athletes were honored, surpassing the previous high of 581 in 2010-11. In addition, 54 individuals have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative GPA over two or more terms.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors given by the conference. To be eligible, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, as well as participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
