The San Diego State women's tennis team posted seven wins on day one of the SDSU Fall Classic II on Friday. The tournament is running Friday through Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU notched five wins in singles play and two in doubles action.
Doubles play would kick off competition on day one of the event. In the black draw, Dora Somoracz and Hailey Johnson would notch the Aztecs' first victory on the day as the duo topped Corrine Schnyder and Mari Taslagyan of Cal State Northridge, 8-2. The doubles red bracket would find Kristin Buth and Laura Antonana Iriarte fall to Natali Coronel and Grace Ysidora of Washington, 8-6. The white draw proved to have an opposite result as Isabelle Hoorn and Olivia Larsson topped the combined team of Lisa Piller of Loyola Marymount and Leslie Chang of Cal State Northridge, 8-4.
Singles action would see the most success for San Diego State. In the red draw, Buth would ensure that she would not fall for a second time to Ysidora of Washington as the Aztec battled for the crown, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Also taking her decision was senior Antonana Iriarte as she downed Jessica Warren of Cal State Northridge in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Tami Nguyen was unable to keep up with Lucia Kovarcikova of Utah in the black draw, 6-4, 6-2.
The white draw saw two SDSU victories on the day. Somoracz would participate in a marathon match against Lorraine Cheung of Northridge that would last over four hours. The San Diego State sophomore took the match to three sets in order to claim the win, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (0), 7-5. Freshman Kennedy Davis finished off Vivian Lin also of Northridge in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The blue singles bracket would have the final Aztec win of the day as Johnson downed Mari Taslagyan of Northridge, 6-2, 7-5.
Larsson could not come away with the decision in the green draw as the freshman fell to Idil Haciralfoglu of crosstown rival, San Diego, 6-3, 6-0. Isabelle Hoorn would find similar fate in the gold draw, 6-1, 6-2.
The tournament will resume play tomorrow with doubles set for a 9 am first serve. Complete results from day two will be posted on GoAztecs.com.
