SAN DIEGO - San Diego State needed four sets to complete a season sweep of Boise State as it defeated the Broncos 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 Thursday evening on Aztec Court. With the victory the Aztecs improve to 14-13 overall and 9-8 in the Mountain West. SDSU had downed the Broncos in three sets earlier this season in Boise.
Raegan Nash had 16 kills to lead all players and also contributed three blocks and six digs along with a .368 hitting percentage in the winning effort. Summer Nash had 15 kills and also contributed a pair of blocks and a dig while Michelle Waber and Emily Harris also finished in double figures in kills with 11 and 10 respectively. Harris hit .304 over the four sets and had a team-high five blocks while Waber chipped in with eight digs.
In addition, setter Johnna Fouch registered her 11th double-double of the season with 43 assists and 12 digs. Libero Christie Ring recorded 15 digs with teammate Courtney Vaccarello ending the night with 13.
The match was statistically even with SDSU edging the visitors in kills (61-58) and digs (67-63) while Boise State (12-16 overall; 6-12 MW) held the upper hand in assists (56-54) and team blocks (9-8).
The opening set saw the score tied on seven occasions with the last time coming at 14-14. The Broncos then won four of the next six points to take control although SDSU did get back to within appoint at 21-20. But kills from four different Boise State players helped seal the set win for the visitors. The Broncos hit .389 in the contest with the Aztecs finishing with a .211 attack percentage.
Set number two saw the score tied six times and have a pair of lead changes before the contest settled into a 21-21 tie. SDSU then got a pair of kills from Michelle Waber plus a Bronco hitting error to go up 24-21. A Boise State kill was then followed by a hitting error by the visitors to give the Aztecs the three-point win and even the match at one set apiece.
After the early portion of the third set went back and forth, San Diego State took the lead for good at 9-8, building its advantage to as many as five points at 19-14. The Broncos could get no closer than three the remainder of the contest as the Aztecs went on to the four-point set win behind six kills by Nash.
In the fourth set San Diego State jumped out to a 7-3 lead and allowed the Broncos to get within three over the remainder of the contest. After a 22-17 lead was pared to three points, SDSU got a pair of kills from Shelton and the set and match winner from Waber to close out the contest.
San Diego State will conclude its 2013 home season with a contest against Mountain West foe Utah State on Saturday (Nov. 23) at 1:00 p.m. on Aztec Court. The match has designated as senior day as the Aztecs will honor eight players competing in their final home match at SDSU.
