SPRINGDALE, Ark. - San Diego State senior fullback Chad Young (La Verne, Calif./Glendora High) has been named a Burlsworth Trophy nominee, the Springdale Rotary Club announced today.

The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding collegiate football player who began his career as a walk-on. A walk-on is defined as a player who began his first season of participation with a Division I (FBS) football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department. Young is one of 53 student-athletes on the list.

Young has started all nine games for the Aztecs this year, rushing 12 times for 73 yards and a touchdown, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt. He also has added 11 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown and has returned two squib kickoffs for 21 yards. Young, who specializes in blocking, has helped SDSU rush for 1,534 yards this year in nine games (170.4 avg.) and pass for 2,355 (261.7 avg.). San Diego State has rushed for 1,274 yards and 18 touchdowns since Sept. 28, which ranks 28th nationally with 212.3 rushing yards per game over that time frame.

For his career, Young has 27 starts and has played in 40 consecutive games (47 overall). He has 40 receptions for 223 yards and five touchdowns and 32 rushing attempts for 133 yards and three scores. Last year, Young helped the Aztecs set a school record with 2,869 rushing yards.

Young joined the team during the 2009 fall camp and received a scholarship in 2011.

The 2012 winner was Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin, who set nine school records during his senior year, throwing for 3,266 yards and 24 touchdowns. McGloin is currently the backup to Terrelle Pryor at quarterback for the NFL's Oakland Raiders.

Winners of five of its last six games, 11 of its last 12 Mountain West contests, five of its last six road games and six straight November match-ups, San Diego State (5-4, 4-1 Mountain West) travels to Hawai'i (0-9, 0-6 MW) on Saturday.
