USAFA, Colo. - The San Diego State cross country team finished ninth at the Mountain West Championships Friday morning at the Eisenhower Golf Club on the campus of Air Force in USAFA, Colo.
The Aztecs totaled 274 points to take ninth out of 11 teams, defeating San Jose State (297) and UNLV (330). Ninth-ranked New Mexico won the meet with 31 points, while No. 20 Boise State (60), Colorado State (117), Air Force (118) and Utah State (121) rounded out the top five. Wyoming came in sixth with 143 points, followed by Nevada (162), Fresno State (201), SDSU (274), the Spartans (297) and the Rebels (330).
"Our team didn't show up and compete today," San Diego State head coach Shelia Burrell said. "We are better than the results show. Competing at such high altitude is not a good enough excuse for this group of ladies. We are a better team than that."
Chelsea Kruthers led the Aztecs for the fourth consecutive meet, covering the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 50.92 seconds to place 56th out of 86 finishers.
Kruthers was followed closely by the quartet of Rachel Roesgen (59th, 24:02.22), Elaine Ribeiro (60th, 24:02.74), Dynasty Gammage (64th, 24:12.43) and Katy Smith (69th, 24:24.01).
Melissa Wendorf was SDSU's No. 6 runner in 81st in 25:57.16, while Jessica Cygan came in 86th in 29:35.83.
Boise State's Emma Bates won the meet in 20:48.15, outdistancing runner-up Samantha Silva of New Mexico (21:12.10).
San Diego State will compete at the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 15 in Sacramento, Calif.
