Volleyball Tops San Jose State, 3-0

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State volleyball team was sharp from the start on Saturday evening, as the Aztecs defeated San Jose State in three sets (25-19, 26-24, 25-15) at Aztec Court for its third-straight victory. With the win, SDSU improved to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West play.

Junior Chaiymin Steel led the Aztecs with 13 kills, while senior Summer Nash had 12 kills with three blocks, junior Michelle Waber added nine kills, senior setter Johnna Fouch recorded 22 assists and senior libero Courtney Vaccarello finished with 15 digs.

San Jose State (3-11, 0-4 MW) was led by senior Hanah Blume's 13 kills, while sophomore Michaela Leonard tallied 32 assists and junior Kiely Pieper added 17 digs.

Already ahead 1-0 after winning the opening set, San Diego State rallied from behind to win a competitive second set. The Aztecs trailed, 13-8, but battled back to knot the score, 15-15. Sophomore Kaja Sandberg and freshman Baylee Little combined for a block to put SDSU in front by one, and a kill by Nash off a Fouch assist tied the score later in the set, 21-21.

San Jose State scored consecutive points to take a two-point advantage, but a Spartans' hitting error knotted the score, 23-23, before an ace by Steel clinched the set victory, 26-24.

The Aztecs began the third set on a 6-1 run, and pushed the lead to 9-3 after Nash and Harris combined for a block. A hard kill by Steel extended SDSU's advantage to 13-6, and a kill from Nash made it 19-9, as the Aztecs cruised to their third-straight victory.

San Diego State returns to action on the road at New Mexico on Thursday, Oct. 10. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. MT.
