SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team continues its early portion of the fall season this weekend, as SDSU hosts the Aztec Invitational Oct. 4-6 at Aztec Tennis Center. The event begins on Friday with doubles play at 10 a.m., which will be followed by two rounds of singles action.
Schools competing in the invite include San Diego, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, USC, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, Arizona, Pacific and Grand Canyon. In addition, there will be a men's open tournament which anyone can sign up for here.
While junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) and senior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) compete as a duo in Main Draw Doubles in the ITA Men's All-American in Tulsa, Okla., SDSU will rely on others to represent the Aztecs over the weekend.
Senior Juan Florez (Bogota, Columbia) finished the 2013 dual season 12-11 in singles action, while sophomore Marvin Tawasi (Mosbach, Germany) looks to continue his progress after going 9-8 in singles play in a strong freshman season. In addition, junior Andranik Khachatryan went 11-9 in singles and 10-8 in doubles play a season ago, and redshirt sophomore Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) has returned to action after missing last dual season due to injury.
San Diego State also added three freshmen to its roster from Germany for the 2013-14 season, including Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany), Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) and Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany).
San Diego State is coming off a Mountain West regular-season championship, as the Aztecs finished conference play with a 6-0 record. SDSU begins its dual season on Jan. 18, 2014, in a doubleheader at home against Nevada and UC Riverside.
