LAS VEGAS - The San Diego State women's golf team currently sits in a tie for second place after shooting a combined 2-over par 290 on Sunday during the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the par-72, 6,261-yard Stallion Mountain Golf Club. Individually, the Aztecs were led by Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who finds herself in a tie for second place after carding a 1-under 71, while Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) landed in a tie for ninth at even-72.

Blair recorded just one blemish on her scorecard, a bogey on the par-5 No. 2, but rebounded with birdies on holes 4 and 6 en route to her seventh consecutive round below par. With her performance, the SDSU freshman and Mountain West Co-Golfer of the Month for September remains in a tie for the runner-up spot with six other players, one stroke in back of leader Elin Arvidsson (-2) of Texas Tech heading into Monday's second round.

Spiranac, meanwhile, landed in an even bigger logjam of 11 golfers who are two shots off the pace in a tie for ninth following the opening 18 holes. The Aztec junior recovered from a flu-hampered appearance in her last outing two weeks ago at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, offsetting four bogeys with a team-high four birdies, including two on her final three holes, to tie her lowest score of the season.

Similarly, Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.) equaled her lowest round of the year after posting a 1-over 73 on Sunday. The SDSU senior was 2-under through 15 holes after making birdies on a pair of par-5s, the 508-yard No. 18 and the 480-yard No. 6, but ran into difficulty with a double-bogey and bogey on holes 7-8, respectively. Despite, the hiccup, Dunnagan finds herself just three strokes out of the lead in a tie for the 21st position.

Elsewhere, Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) sits one shot in back of Dunnagan after recording an opening-round 74. The Aztec sophomore was 3-over following an untimely double-bogey on the par-3 No. 17, but came back strong with a birdie and nine straight pars to end the day tied for the 31st spot.

The SDSU starting five also included fellow classmate Shannon Lubar (Littleton, Colo.), whose round of 82 was plagued by four bogeys and a trio of double-bogeys.

The Aztecs were also represented by a pair of individual competitors in juniors Kristina Lynn (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Lynn opened with a 3-over 75, overcoming three consecutive bogeys on the back nine with two birdies and two pars on her final four holes to finish the day in a tie for 43rd, while Alston carded an 83 in her first varsity appearance of the year.

Host school UNLV fired a collective even-par 288 to grab a two-shot advantage over SDSU (+2) and Minnesota (+2), followed closely by UCF (+3) and Texas Tech (+4).

Second-round action continues at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday when the Aztecs tee off on hole No. 1 with UNLV and Minnesota, starting at 9:28 a.m. PT.
