MALIBU, Calif. - The San Diego State men's tennis team completed play in this weekend's USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship on Sunday afternoon. It was the Aztecs' final tournament of the fall season.
Junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) dropped his quarterfinal singles match to Pepperdine's Alex Sarkissian, 6-3, 6-1. Bertsch, ranked No. 114 in the nation, finishes the fall season with a 7-3 record.
In doubles action, SDSU's team of Bertsch and senior Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) fell to USC's team of Robbie Bellamy/Jonny Wang, 8-3, in the round of 16 on Sunday. The Aztecs' top doubles duo concludes fall play with a 6-4 mark.
In the fourth round of the consolation singles bracket, Nicholas dropped a close three-set match to Arizona's Fredrik Ask, 2-6, 7-5, 10-6, while freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) also lost a tight match in three sets to UC Santa Barbara's Sasha Gryaznov, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5.
San Diego State begins its dual season on Jan. 18, as the Aztecs play host to a doubleheader against Nevada and UC Riverside at Aztec Tennis Center.
